![]() B&G Yacht Management, known for their attention to detail and superior customer service, proudly announce the addition of two new service lines to their offering: metal machining/fabrication and welding, and shipwright services. B&G’s expanded operation has rebranded as B&G Marine Services, and will continue to operate from their convenient Nanny Cay location. B&G clients can expect the same high-quality work across all service lines, with even stricter adherence to schedules and cost estimates than before as a result of bringing metal- and wood-working in-house. Todd Patterson, Managing Director of B&G, said: “We are constantly working to make B&G better: better than yesterday and the day before, and better for our clients. For this 2018-2019 season, that meant taking control of machining, welding and woodworking, services which we had previously had to subcontract away from B&G. Our clients are now receiving an even better finished product, whether that be fabricating a custom mount for a new radar, repairing a wooden handrail for a companionway, or a full-scale refit project.” This exciting expansion would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the entire B&G team, which has also expanded to include: Ravindra Sukhu, Lead Machinist – Ravi is from Guyana, but has been in the BVI for the past 15 years. He is an exceptionally talented machinist, and has considerable experience in boat repair, particularly structural and aesthetic aspects. Wyatt Lawrence, Lead Shipwright – Wyatt is a “newbie” to the BVI, having recently moved from New Brunswick, Canada. He is professionally trained, and incredibly skilled, in boatbuilding (20+ years’ experience!), and has led boatbuilding courses at both the WoodenBoat School in Maine and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Nova Scotia. Mid-2013, B&G purchased a used 20’ shipping container, on a trailer, and moved it to the Sheppard’s Marina parking lot at Soper’s Hole. One third of the space was converted to an office, and the remaining two thirds served as a workshop and storeroom for tools, equipment and spare parts. That container was moved to Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour for the summer season of 2014, where it was the team’s base of operations for maintenance and projects done aboard the majority of the managed fleet, which was stored there. The container traveled back to Soper’s Hole for the 2014/2015 season, but lived in the Frenchman’s Cay Marina parking lot, instead, as the Sheppard family had begun construction on their property and could no longer afford B&G the space. The container traveled to Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour again for the 2015 summer season, but did not make the return trip to Tortola at the end of the season. That summer, B&G took on the lease for Frenchman’s Cay Marina, which included an office/workshop space, so bringing the container back to Soper’s Hole was not necessary. The container remained at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour for the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons, serving as home base for team members needing to occasionally do work for clients on Virgin Gorda during the regular season, and seeing regular use once again for the 2016 summer season. Starting in 2016, for various reasons, more and more of B&G’s clients chose to keep their boats at Nanny Cay Boat Yard, rather than at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, for the summer seasons. This is one of the many reasons that led B&G to revamp its business model in 2017, moving from Soper’s Hole to Nanny Cay and offering more mobile support to its clients, as opposed to a rigid dockage and management package available at only one location. The container made the move to Nanny Cay, too, and has served the team well (especially because it weathered Irma beautifully!). However, because our team has grown and genuinely needs more space in order to continue providing our clients with the highest level of service possible, we’re getting a new, bigger, better container! We’ve partnered with Container Tech in Atlanta, GA to kit out a used 40’ container that will have more than one window and door! Can you tell that we’re excited? We expect that our new container will arrive toward the end of March, so stay tuned and we’ll let you know when it is here and in place! ![]() Tracy and her family (husband Gordon and their two kids Cooper and Emily) moved to the BVI from Sydney, Australia, at the beginning of the 2016-2017 winter season, though Tracy is no BVI newbie – she first arrived in BVI in 1998! During her initial stint here, Tracy wore a few different hats, but quickly found herself drawn to the crewed charter industry, working on a variety of local yachts, including the very well-known 105’ trimaran Cuan Law. In 2007, ready for some time in the ‘real world’, Tracy and Gordon moved to Sydney, where Tracy worked in administration, and accounts in particular, in the medical services field. With family still in BVI (Tracy’s sister- and brother-in-law are Liz Jackson of TICO and Eddie Brockbank of Doyle Sailmakers BVI), Tracy and family were eventually drawn back to paradise, and we could not be more pleased! As you might be able to tell, Tracy’s professional background makes her the perfect fit for the B&G team, and she has proven to be just that. Get to know Tracy a bit better with this fun Q&A sesh: Q. What was it that first made you feel part of the B&G team? A. I think B&G is just like a big family, I felt a part of the team from the beginning. Q. What is 1 dish you absolutely, positively will not eat? A. Tripe or some sort of animal feet. Q. What is your dream car? A. No real dream car, but here, one with air conditioning and good suspension!! Q. If you were trapped on desert island, what 3 things would you want to have with you? A. Food, Shelter and Wine!! Q. Do you have a nickname at work? A. Not yet, thank goodness! Q. If you haven’t already, would you ever skydive? A. No thank you – afraid of heights! Q. If you could splurge on 1 must-have item, and the price did not matter, what would it be? A. A boat! Q. Which superhuman power would you like to have? A. Teleporting myself – not a great flyer! Q. What is your favorite thing about working at B&G? A. I work with Todd and Kara in the office mostly, and really enjoy that. They are always keen to teach and ready to work and that gets you motivated to do the same. It's also a lot of fun liaising with Anand, Tamara and Raju on a daily basis, learning about the technical things they do, and helping them solve problems when they come up. |
